Fancy text is made of special characters, not real fonts. Screen readers may read it badly, so keep it for decoration. Your text never leaves your browser, and the size slider changes the preview only.

How to Use the Underline Text Generator in 3 Steps

  1. Type the words to underline

Enter a heading, a label or a short phrase. A line under every letter is easiest to read when the text is only a few words long.

  2. Pick the kind of line

Underline is a single line and Double Underline adds a second. Dotted Below and Tilde Below are lighter, while the bold, italic and script versions change the letters as well.

  3. Copy and paste

Click a style to copy it and paste it into the field you want. Check how the line looks in the app, because some fonts leave small gaps between letters.

What Underlined Text Is Made Of

An underline in a word processor is a style that the program draws below the letters. Copy that text into a plain field and the line disappears, because plain text has no styles. Generated underline works the other way round. The line is stored as characters, so there is nothing to lose when you paste.

The trick is a combining character. Unicode includes marks that attach themselves to the letter before them: a low line for a single underline, a double low line for two lines, a dot or a tilde below for lighter versions. The generator puts one after every letter, and your device draws them together.

Choosing a Line Style

  • Underline is the standard single line and the safest choice.
  • Double Underline adds weight, which suits a heading but can look busy in a small bio.
  • Dotted Below and Tilde Below are lighter and work as a gentle accent.
  • Bold Underline, Italic Underline and Script Underline change the letters first and then add the line.
  • Overline puts the line above the letters.

Good Uses for Underlined Text

  • A section label in a plain text note, such as the title of a list.
  • The first words of a caption that you want people to notice.
  • A name or keyword in a bio where the app has no formatting menu.
  • Highlighting a deadline or a date in a casual message.

Cautions

Because readers expect a line under text to be a link, underlined words can create false hope. Keep real links in plain text so the app can turn them into links. Underline marks can also confuse screen readers and search, so never use them for addresses, instructions or anything people must be able to find later.

Some chat apps already offer their own underline. Fancy Fonts for Discord uses double underscores around a word, and Fancy Fonts for Telegram has an underline option in its formatting menu. Built-in formatting is cleaner when it exists. To cross words out instead, try the Strikethrough Text Generator.

Underline Text Generator FAQ

Why does my underlined text look like a link?

Readers have learned that a line under text means something is clickable. Generated underline is not a link, so use it for labels and emphasis and avoid it where people might try to tap it.

Which underline style is the easiest to read?

A single Underline or Dotted Below. Double lines and wavy lines compete with the letters, especially on small screens.

Does underline cover spaces between words?

No. The mark is added to letters, numbers and symbols and skipped for spaces, so each word has its own line and the gaps stay open.

Can I underline a whole paragraph?

You can, but it is a poor idea. The marks add extra characters to every letter, long text becomes hard to read, and an app may handle very long strings of combining marks badly.

Why is there an Overline in the list?

It uses the same kind of mark, but above the letters instead of below. Some designs use a line above a title, so it is there when you want that look.

What is the difference between this and underline in an editor?

An editor stores underline as formatting that can be removed again. Here the line is part of the characters, so it stays when you paste into a plain text field and cannot be switched off afterwards.
